Protecting Children in Emergencies

Emergency Response

The Philippines is one of the more high-risk countries in the world. The country is often hit by typhoons, and is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making the country more at risk of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Children become more vulnerable in the face of disaster. They become more prone to neglect and abandonment in emergencies. Every child needs proper care and support in the midst of these crises. We work to protect children's rights during disasters and provide support to families to prevent separation.

Providing Emergency Relief in Crises

Children and families need the proper care and support in the midst of crises. SOS Philippines has responded to many areas greatly affected by many natural disasters via relief operations throughout the years. We work with our partners to help children and families at risk through our emergency response program. Our emergency response teams have helped children at risk all over the country for over 20 years.

Last November 2020, the Philippines was struck by three strong typhoons; Quinta, Rolly and Ulysses. Albay, Bicol is one of the most affected areas in the country. Many homes were devastated by flooding and lahar from Mayon Volcano and lives were lost. Those who survived needed immediate support to rebuild their lives.

In partnership with RCBC Bankard, we conducted a two-day humanitarian response to provide support to the children and families affected by Typhoon Quinta. Families were given monetary support to let them buy groceries for their children. They also get to choose from the supermarket the goods they need for the next weeks.

When the Taal Volcano erupted in early 2020, many families and children leaving near the vicinity were at risk. The families and children living in SOS Children's Village in Lipa moved to the village in Manila for their safety. During their stay, every child there was still provided and cared for according to their needs until it's safe to stay their homes again.
